Garden Suites, Backyard Studios & Secondary Suites
Looking for a Garden Suite, Garden Studio, or Secondary Suite in your backyard? We can provide a solution customized for your needs—whether it’s a creative studio, guest house, backyard gym studio, or extra living space. Our units are built to the same standards as residential properties, ensuring comfort, durability, and compliance with local regulations.
Did you know? Many municipalities in Ontario now allow secondary suites and garden suites to help address housing needs. We can help you navigate the requirements and create a turnkey solution for your property. While no permits are usually required for the Lodgy Cube backyard office model, for bigger units like these suites, a building permit may be required, but we will assist you with all necessary documentation and drawings to ensure compliance with local regulations.

- Does The Cube have heating and cooling?Yes! The cube comes with installed AC & heating system (2 in 1) and you can enjoy it all year long!
- Do I need a building permit to build the Cube on my lot? Thanks to the Ontario building code, in almost all cases the answer is NO (we will explain it below in details). But even when the permit is required (which is an extremely rare occasion), do not worry - the cost of permit for such a small accessory building is going to be negligible and we will support you with all the necessary drawings and docs.
The Lodgy Cube (in the default design) is an accessory building of 7x8 feet (56 sq. ft.) and you generally do not need a permit for such an accessory building in Ontario (limit for the Province of Ontario is 160 sq.ft). But still, keep in mind that there are other considerations, such as:
- Intended use: in Ontario, accessory buildings are not permitted for human habitation, so in case you want to sleep, cook or bath in The Cube (which sounds weird in the first place), you will need a permit for an accessory dwelling unit. Using your computer in the Cube is fine and not considered "habitation". Also, using an accessory building to gain profit (e.g. serve your customers there) might also require a permit, unless "home occupation" is allowed by your municipality zoning by-law. - e.g. selling any merchandise from the Cube or turning it into a coffee shop might need a permit (unless a particular profit-gaining activity is permitted as a "home occupation" by your municipality zoning by-law).
So as far as you do not physically meet your customers and sell things out of the Cube, do not sleep, cook or bath in the Cube, you should meet a no-permit eligibility criteria for the Cube in most municipalities of Ontario (e.g. Toronto, Oakville, Markham, Burlington, Hamilton etc. - as of Jul 23rd 2024).
Keep in mind that there are other considerations/limitations, such as lot coverage, setbacks, where exactly you put it on the lot etc - we can help you answer these questions during our free lot survey visit.
You can always contact your municipality to double check if your municipality has any restrictions (or reach out to us and we can assist you with that)
